French Fries are the only thing that I can eat from McDonalds. All started after taken English 0812 in Temple University Japan Campus. The class topic was about McDonaldization. So, we watched different kinds of documentaries about the fast food industry, documentaries such as Superzied Me. After seeing how animals are treated and know how much bad is to consume fast food, I could not eat it anymore, except for fries :P. I guess, the reason is because I love fries too much that it is impossible for me to stop eat them and also I did not see much about fries on the documentary.

6Songs Mixup

Assignment:

Hey guys! So here is my last DS106 assignment for this second section!

For the first time I am going to do an audio assignment. This time, I choose the assignment called ” Songs Mixup”

Basically, in the instructions tell us to:

Get short pieces from 6 different songs and put them into once piece. Can you identify all 6 songs?

So here it is!

So, were you able to identify all 6 songs? I am going to put the answers on the story section for this post

Process:

First, I choose songs that have different rhythms. After, I downloaded Audacity, a  free audito editor and recorder. It was not that difficult and took me less than 30 minutes to finish editing it. Simply I cut the part that I wanted to use and then put all of them together through the process of cutting, copying and pasting. Then, I recorded using Soundcloud and DONEEEEEEEEEEEEE 🙂 Approximately 3 secods for each song. So it is a little bit hard trying to figure out the song’s name.

I enjoyed doing this assignment, because I could listen  to my favorite musics and relax a little bit. My favorite song from the listed songs in here, is the second one, David Guetta featuring Avicii, Where them girls at! The first and secon song were hard to identify in my opinion.

Web 1.0 –> Web 2.0 –> Web 3.0

After having read the article What is Web 2.0  written by Tim O’Reilly, I ended up a little bit confuse about the definition on the term. So, I decided to read more about the definition along with learning what these terms, Web 1.0 and Web 3.0 mean.

Web 1.0 is basically the first stage of the World Wide Web. the firs generation of internet sites that primarily provided information. People where able to explore webpages with hyperlinks, but they were hard to make websites . Therefore, it was extremely high for the average person to create content or be able to voice their opinion

In 2004, Web 2.0 has been introduced as a social web, which made it easier for everyone to create a website where they can talk about anything they want with anyone they want. People now are able to interact throughout sites like Facebook. The community can write, discuss and comment. It is so easy for anyone to participate on the internet on any topic.

Blogging on WordPress, micro blogging on Twitter is a way to give people information or get information from others. Another social media can be Youtube, they can talk about videos. And Facebook can talk about pictures. In this Web 2.0 the users are essential. This is because without people writting or posting on the sites, they will be no interaction on sites. Therefore, users are responsible to produce the content.

The web 3.0 is the next step of intelligent omnipresent, a continuation on existing techniques. Here, the computers can understand the meaning behind information, they can learn what we are infested in. Then help us better finned what we are looking for. This is what the semantic web, web 3.0 is all about.It can recognize people, places, companies, produces and more. Also it can understand the relationship between things. In other words, its a recommendment system that make a personal approach by the webstte possible. For example, Amazon offers the clients the products that other people with the same interest bought before them. Last fm is a site where you can listen online music. By using smart systems, this sites are in the continuing learning process and they anticipate what their users like or dislike.

Midori to ExtraordinaMidori

Just realized I haven’t done any DS106 assignments in a while….:O

Assignment:

My second assignment is from the Visual assignment called Normal to Extraordinary

The instructions  tell us to :

¨Take a friend and turn him/her from a normal looking person to an extraordinary looking. Put the shots side by side for comparison.¨

I changed a little bit the instructions, because at 01 am (the time I was doing this assignment) no one, no friends were around me, so I just used an old picture of myself for this assignment

Process:

First I looked for an old picture of myself. So, I went to Orkut, a social networking similar to Facebook where I have pictures of myself when I was 16 years old 🙂

So, This is the one that I decided to use :

The reason is because, I wanted a picture that shows clearly my face so I can do some interesting stuffs with my face LOL

For this assignment I used the image editor,  FotoFlexer. First I added the patchwork effect!

Then, I changed the main color to green!!!! And the reason I choose green its simple because of my name…Midori… LOL. Anyways, after that I made it colorful even more

Well, yeah I was not happy with the result, so I played around a little bit and when I added the Fresco effect it became cooler!!!!!!

Story: 

This picture was taken by myself when I was 16 years old. Yeah, I just remembered that at that time, I used to love take picture of myself just for fun LOL

Looking at this old picture made me realized that I haven’t changed that much :O

About the assignment, I really enjoyed playing around with the colors and see how my picture makes an extraordinary changes by just adding effects. It took me less than 30 minutes. Well, this assignment is simple so I could have make it in…maybe 15 minutes but, I don’t know, I think I was so into this, that took me 30 minutes to finish it.

How was everyone’s Valentine’s day? Today I decided to write a quick blog about Valentine’s. Well today I saw many status on Facebook saying something like “Everyone calls it Valentines day, I call it Tuesday”! haha well for me, it was kind of the same. I couldn’t do anything because I’ve got exams tomorrow. However, I got many chocolates from friends and nice messages from my family and an awesome gift from my boyfriend:)

So, every year, I celebrate Valentin’s day with my boyfriend or friends. This year fortunately for me I spent with my boyfriend (although we spent all the time in the computer lab and study room :() but, I have never ask myself how other countries celebrate this day, or  do they celebrate the same?  So, I decided to learn about how each country celebrates it as Valentine’s Day.  Based on the article, Valentine’s Day Around the World  I choose what I found “interesting” way of celebrating Valentines.

Britain

As a Western country, Britain’s couples celebrate 14th of February by giving flowers, cards and chocolates. What I found interesting in Britain is that, English children are accustomed to sing special songs of love proper to the occasion, and in return they receive gifts of candy, fruit or money.

Denmark 

In Denmark, there is basically three ways of celebrating Valentine’s day. The most traditional way of celebrating this day is to give “love” cards.  Another representative of this day are flowers. People in Denmark have the habit to send pressed white flowers called snowdrops to their most beloved people. The last traditional way of celebrating it is by  sending  cards named gaekkebrev (humorous letter), and the sender write a rhyme but do not sign his name but with points, one for each letter of his name. If she guesses who sent it, the guy rewards her with an Easter egg at this event!!:)

Japan

As you all know, Valentine’s Day is a celebration in which the lovers, boyfriends, husbands or friends express their feelings to each other. This happens in most Western countries, but in Japan is different. Women  chocolates to men who they consider future boyfriends, husbands, friends or colleagues working. There are several types present, chocolate:

•  Honmei choco (本命 チョコ – real chocolate)

Girls give Honmei choolates to their boyfriends, partners, the person who she really likes. Some girls buy expensive chocolates like the famous Godiva, the Pierre Marcolini, Jean-Paul Hevin and these other brands that are branded or prepare a homemade gift.

• Giri choco (義理 チョコ – chocolate of obligation)

Does not really mean “obligation” but is a chocolte given to rriends, parents, siblings or co-workers. Girls usually get rather cheaper chocolate compare to Honmei choco.

• Volume choco (友 チョコ – friendly chocolate)

This chocolate is given to friends at school. I remember when I was in junior high school that  always there was a guys who did not receive anything, and I guess more than one student will come home with a heart broken … He did not receive nothing on this day, is something that sticks in the memory for some time I guess.

I could feel when I was in high school and junior high school that guys don’t care too much about the brand of the chocolate, but care about how many chocolate they get. On the other hand, I think that Japanese girls a more realistic because they give chocolates thinking about the gift they will receive or wish to receive (or ask) on White Day which is celebrated in March 14th where guys give gifts to girls in return.

Valentine’s is celebrate in someways kind of the same, but each country has its traditional way of celebrating it. It was pretty fun to know how each country defers from others. Well, if anyone know another country that celebrates Valentine’s in an interesting way, please share it with us 🙂

Group 3 Project -Facebook Default Private Settings-

 

Who doesn’t know Facebook? I am sure most of does and has an account of one. Our group 3, has decided to go for an Infographic about the lack of people’s privacy on the Internet. The Infographic we are going to analyze its called Do you know who’s watching you?  and we divided it into 5 section. I choose the first part, about Facebook’s default Privacy settings, because I am a user of Facebook and as most of us does, I share information and I wanted to go for deep detail of what is going on with our privacy.

 

Facebook founded in February 2004 by Mark Zuckerberg defines itself as a social network that gives people the power to share and makes the world more open and connected. Millions of people use Facebook everyday to keep in touch with friends, upload an unlimited number of photos, share links and videos, and learn more about the people they know. Available in more than 70 languages and having 845 million monthly active users at the end of December 2011, (data from the Facebook Newsroom) Facebook has become the most popular social network in the world. Since 2005, until today Facebook has experienced many transformations.What began as a network exclusively for students of Harvard University, became a communication tool available to everyone since 2006.

Every time Facebook revamp its site, they tend to adjust the default privacy settings. Many people on Facebook are not aware of this changes, and they tend to accept the default settings not having any information about the changes. As we are going to look at the changes of private policy from 2005 to 2010, you will realized that it is important that each user should be aware and inform about the changes as user’s privacy has become more open to the public and the entire Internet.

Generally the changes from 2005 to 2010 it’s pretty amazing, but  “Photos”, “Wall Posts” and “Likes” had a radical change. For example, in the case of  “Wall Posts”, until 2009, only the Network had access of it, however after a year, the entire Internet had the access of people’s wall posts. In the case of  “Likes” is more shocking. until 2007, “Likes” were in control of the user, no one could see it, however after 2 years, since 2009, The entire Internet has access to it.

Here is a Timeline written by Kurt Opsahl, a Senior staff at the Electronic Frontier Foundation ( an international non-profit digital rights advocacy) where he explains each privacy policy from the year 2005 to 2010.

 Private Policy 2005:

No personal information that you submit to The Facebook will be available to any user of the Web Site who does not belong to at least one of the groups specified by you in your privacy settings.

Private Policy 2006:

We understand you may not want everyone in the world to have the information you share on Facebook; that is why we give you control of your information. Our default privacy settings limit the information displayed in your profile to your school, your specified local area, and other reasonable community limitations that we tell you about.

Privacy Policy 2007: 

Profile information you submit to Facebook will be available to users of Facebook who belong to at least one of the networks you allow to access the information through your privacy settings (e.g., school, geography, friends of friends). Your name, school name, and profile picture thumbnail will be available in search results across the Facebook network unless you alter your privacy settings.

Privacy Policy 2008: 

Facebook is designed to make it easy for you to share your information with anyone you want. You decide how much information you feel comfortable sharing on Facebook and you control how it is distributed through your privacy settings. You should review the default privacy settings and change them if necessary to reflect your preferences. You should also consider your settings whenever you share information. …

Information set to “everyone” is publicly available information, may be accessed by everyone on the Internet (including people not logged into Facebook), is subject to indexing by third party search engines, may be associated with you outside of Facebook (such as when you visit other sites on the internet), and may be imported and exported by us and others without privacy limitations. The default privacy setting for certain types of information you post on Facebook is set to “everyone.” You can review and change the default settings in your privacy settings.

Privacy Policy 2009:

Certain categories of information such as your name, profile photo, list of friends and pages you are fan of gender, geographic region, and networks you belong to are considered publicly available to everyone, including Facebook-enhanced applications, and therefore do not have privacy settings. You can, however, limit the ability of others to find this information through search using your search privacy settings.

Private Policy 2010:

When you connect with an application or website it will have access to General Information about you. The term General Information includes your and your friends’ names, profile pictures, gender, user IDs, connections, and any content shared using the Everyone privacy setting. … The default privacy setting for certain types of information you post on Facebook is set to “everyone.” … Because it takes two to connect, your privacy settings only control who can see the connection on your profile page. If you are uncomfortable with the connection being publicly available, you should consider removing (or not making) the connection.

 

From this timeline, we can note how Facebook  in 2005, offered our own space where only ourselves had the total control of our data. However, over time things have changed and in 2010, our privacy settings do not work at all .

As the example of “privacy settings do not work at all” you can see that the private and security offered by Facebook is really poor and as the graph suggests in the Info graphic, if a new user of Facebook doesn’t properly know how to set her or his private settings the entire Internet will have access to her or his private information.

 

TDC33 -Mathematics :S-

Today’s Daily Create is to take a picture of confusion

So, I choose to take a picture of mathematics because I hate mathematics and even if I study hard, I end up with many many question marks all over my head

At the moment I read the instructions the only thing that came up on my mind was Math!

I haven’t take any math class yet, although I should 😛 but just remembering how I suffer when I was studying for the placement test made me run away from taking it 😛

Does anyone know how to be good at math? 😛

Make a photo upside down that is never seen that way.

The first thing that came to my mind was taking a picture of me doing standhand and rotate it. I tried to do it several times but fail hehe. So, I asked my boyfriend to help me with this and here it is. I took a picture of him doing standhand and then with my iPhone I rotated it:)

Stay Hungry, Stay Foolish

Assignment: Here is my first Ds106 assignment for section 2, the State of Net. To be honest, I was so into other works that I haven’t touch or even look at the DS106 assignment for several days, so I was kind of excited to play around editing pictures again. However, the assignment I choose didn’t required any editation or anything. I’ve chosen to go for the Visualize That Quote from the Visual Assignments.

Submitted by John Johnston, this assignment tell us to:

illustrate/explain the quote in pictures with the least number of pictures required
you can drag to re-order, click pic to swap, x remove pic, – hide pic leave word.

Although, he provided a link to look at quotes, I decided to use Brainy Quotes as I have been using from the beggining of this course and I feel more confident with it.

Process: Very simple process, I had in my mind to use Steve Job a well recognized pioneer, Steve Jobs. Therefore, right away, I looked for a simple and short quote that don’t have much letters such as ‘a’ ‘or’ ‘is’. So I found the perfect quote,

STAY HUNGRY, STAY FOOLISH

Then, with Flickr , I started to look for pictures that matchs each words. Most of the previous assignments images were found on Google Image , s this was my first time to look pictures from Flickr and took my a little bit to get to know the service. I had some problems with saving images from Flickr, some I did figured out how to save it, but some pictures unfortunetely couldn’t save it so I looked for others that actually I could save. Then, using FotoFlexer I create a frame for each picture and that’s it :D!

Story: Personally, this quote has become one of my favorites. I couldn’t find any official information about what message Steve Jobs tried to tell people by mentioning it. But this quote was mentioned at the end of his commencement speech at Stanford University in 2005. I read the whole speech from an article provided by Stanford University’News. An in the lest paragraph, I found that “Stay Hungry, Stay Foolish” was a farewell message from the Whole Earth Catalog. The Whole Earth Catalog, also known as the “Bible of Steve Jobs”, was published twice a your between 1968-1972, (also, occasionally from 1972-1998). with independent and countercultural that aimed to provide education and access, through a listing of resources and tools within a critical and ecological future of Earth and humanity. After mentioning the quote, Steve Jobs ended his speech by saying : And I have always wished that for myself. ANd now, as you graduate to begin a new, I wish that for you. 

My interpretation of this quote is as follow :

Always remain hungry for what you really want, meaning that keep wanting stuffs and become a fool in order to achieve what you want meaning that never think that you know enough.

So, what is your interpretation?
